SLEEP😴

Clocks are everywhere and not just in our homes. They work all the way down to the cellular level.

A lot of our bodily time is based on light or dark. For example, if you live close to the equator, or even on it, the duration of days and nights are very similar throughout the year. But if you live further away from the equator your days might get longer or shorter depending on the season. For me here in India, I live very close to the equator so the length of days and nights here don't change a lot and are predictable. But for someone who lives, say in Stockholm, Sweden the days and nights change drastically. In the winter they receive only six hours of daylight. This is why the circadian rhythm [your body clock] would be more stable in India than in Sweden. There are two main hormones in your body that help you sleep and stay awake. Melatonin is the hormone that helps you shut down and Cortisol is the hormone that starts preparing you for waking up. It does things like regulating blood pressure and releasing glucose throughout your body. Now glucose is food for your cells, which means that your body is getting ready to do work even before you wake up. During the day you produce a hormone called Adenosine which makes you feel tired during the day [Fun fact!: people tend to get tired after lunch because their body is focusing most of its energy on digestion]. In the evening when it starts to get dark your body starts producing Melatonin again which will help you sleep. After that, the cycle repeats, and in the morning you start producing Cortisol which will wake you up.  Every day is a series of ups and downs controlled by our circadian rhythm.
So dear readers, stay away from screens and caffeine, for it will disrupt your production of Melatonin and will also ruin your circadian rhythm.

TODAY'S TOPIC: documenting

We have all tried to maintain a diary or a journal. But for a lot of us, this hasn't worked, either because we didn't get the time or we just couldn't keep up with what goes on in one itty bitty little book. In any case, journaling doesn't mean writing about your day in detail it just means documenting your day, it can be tracking your health, keeping a record of your calls, or even keeping track of your goals and achievements [that's what I do by the way]. So my advice for you today is that you should personalize the way you keep track of things and what you keep track of, you don't have to do it like somebody else.
